The City of Watertown seeks qualified applicants for the Associate Auditor for the City Auditor’s Office. The position is responsible for cross training and supporting the payroll, benefits and accounts payable staff and other tasks as assigned by the City Auditor. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following and other reasonably related tasks: Reviewing payroll timesheets for accuracy, entering payroll data into payroll processing system, balancing payroll, and submitting for processing. Completes quarterly unemployment reports, running month-end reports for departments and working with them on discrepancies. Responsible for preparing, complying with, and filing quarterly and year-end state and federal filings (W-2, 1095-C, 1099s, etc.). Serves as benefits administrator in his or her absence. Coding invoices for entry, reviewing invoices for past due amounts, sales tax, or unusual amounts or purchases, making phone calls to departments to resolve issues with invoices, entering invoices into the City accounting system, preparing warrants for City Manager signature. Assists with retro payroll calculations, performs employees counts and data analysis, and provides analytical and accounting work in the maintenance and processing of financial records as requested by the City Auditor and Assistant City Auditor.
Required Minimum Qualifications :
Associate degree in accounting or related field and experience in municipal finance preferred; OR equivalent combination of experience and education which demonstrates an ability to be successful in the position. The successful candidate should have experience with finance administration, general accounting practices and municipal finance software designed for payroll, benefits, accounts payable, general ledger, as well as experience with the HR functions related to benefits administration.
Knowledge and skills: Knowledge of Massachusetts General Laws, and the Uniform Municipal Accounting System (UMAS), including an understanding of relevant GAAP and GASB accounting standards. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the public; ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions; ability to work well under pressure while maintaining a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail; Competent with Munis, Microsoft Word/Excel, and Windows 10 operating system. A high degree of organization and the ability to meet specified deadlines are essential.
Expected Starting Hiring Range: The hiring range is $63,196 to $77,726/annually dependent upon qualifications and education, plus an excellent benefit package which includes pension, deferred compensation, health insurance 80% City paid premium, paid vacation, sick, personal, and holidays; flexible spending accounts, education assistance, and more.
