The City of Watertown seeks a Principal Account Clerk for the Treasurer/Collector office. Under the general administrative direction of the Treasurer/Collector or designee, this position will be responsible for the successful management of the customer service, administrative, financial, clerical duties pertaining to the receipt, processing and recording of city funds.  

This position will be responsible for responding to requests for information and assistance from taxpayers. Generates delinquent tax bills with Assessor’s office staff; processes payments and coordinates with banks to obtain information and resolve payment issues. Reconciles receivables, abatements, commitments, and refunds. Processes real estate, personal property, excise and water/sewer abatements, refunds, and additional commitments. Process MLC requests. Processes departmental deposits including data entry. Distributes payroll checks and special, school and city warrant payments. Balance bi-weekly payrolls.  Prepare bills and demand notices for mailing. Collects payments, provides releases and responds to questions pertaining to parking and excise tax collection. Process turnovers from the Deputy Collector’s Office. Prepares monthly accounts receivable report; reconcile receivables. Replies to correspondence; provides assistance to staff and to members of the public. Prepares and makes bank deposits. Performs daily reconciliation of the department’s receipts. Processes the department’s bills and orders supplies. Trains new employees and provides additional assistance to staff as necessary. Performs similar or related work as required, or as situation dictates.

Required Minimum Qualifications: High School Diploma or GED; Associate degree preferred; 3 – 5 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge of Munis or similar financial system.

Knowledge & Ability: Knowledge of standard office practices and procedures.  Familiarity with bookkeeping, banking and reconciliation processes; familiar with municipal taxation preferred.  Knowledge of office equipment and the operation of computer software applications, particularly word processing, spreadsheet, database, email and internet.

SALARY: $48,528.18-$51,483.96 annually, commensurate with experience, plus excellent benefits
