The Longwood Collective (LC) is a non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing Boston’s Longwood Medical and Academic Area (LMA) for the benefit of those who live, work, or receive care in the LMA. The LMA is one of Boston’s busiest and most dynamic neighborhoods and an epicenter of innovation, culture, education, and healthcare. The Controller position at The Longwood Collective is a great opportunity to join an accounting team supporting four organizations: Longwood Collective, MASCO Services, Longwood Medical Area Child Care Center, and Colleges of the Fenway.The Longwood Collective is a non-profit corporation established to plan, develop, and enhance Boston’s Longwood Medical and Academic Area for the benefit of the public and its 24 member organizations.

Position SummaryDirect, plan, and implement all initiatives and activities of the Finance and Accounting Department for Longwood Collective(LC), its subsidiary MASCO Services, Inc. (MSI), and relatedorganizations.

Essential ResponsibilitiesDirectly and through subordinate staff, design, develop and administer accounting functions, including payroll, collections, fixed asset system, monthly and annual financial management reporting, yearend audit process, and tax return preparation.
Provide recommendations to the CFO on the development of LC’s objectives and policies with respect to financial reporting and policies.
Assess the overall performance of the department in relation to established goals; make recommendations to improve the effectiveness of accounting functions.
Prepare monthly financial schedules and supporting sub-schedules in a timely manner. Collaborate with managers to review results.
Responsible for tax reporting. Work with outside accounting firms to prepare annual tax returns such as federal returns 1120, 990, and 990 T and state tax returns 355 and M355. File quarterly sales tax returns for taxable entity and annual return for abandoned property.
Prepare quarterly financial packages for Finance Committee and management.
Responsible for monthly accounting for company investments.  Assist CFO in the evaluation of investment performance. Attend company Investment Sub-Committee meetings and provide information and recommendations as needed.  Prepare annual budget and forecast for investment income.
Manage annual audit and year-end reporting. Make recommendations based on need for internal audits.
Assist CFO with annual budget, quarterly forecasts, and insurance renewal, including presentation of the annual budget and forecast to Finance Committee and internal groups.
Manage all aspects of the accounting software package. Train employees, answer staff inquiries, and work with IT and outside vendors to solve software-related issues.
Manage financial records, including administration of record retention program, organization of historical financial reports, including audit books, and record safeguarding for prior periods.
Negotiate departmental contracts with outside vendors.

Supervisory ResponsibilitiesRecruit, select, and train new employees to maintain desired staffing level.
Lead and coach employees to accomplish desired performance results. Establish and communicate job expectations; monitor and evaluate employee performance. 

Required QualificationsBachelor’s degree in accounting or finance.
Minimum of ten years of accounting and finance experience, including supervisory experience.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office software applications, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.  Strong spreadsheet skills, including macros, pivot tables, and consolidations.  Previous ADP payroll, Microsoft Dynamics, and DocuWare software experience desired. 
Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to present clear, concise, and timely communications through multiple methods
Professional interpersonal style; ability to interact and work with a diverse range of people.
Ability to work under the pressure of tight deadlines.
Ability to handle sensitive issues and information with diplomacy and sensitivity.
