The Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC) seeks candidates for the role of Clean Energy and Climate Planner Il to build a more climate-resilient, sustainable, and equitable region. Specifically, this person will be part of the Clean Energy Department and provide project management and content-area support to MAPC’s implementation of a clean energy jobs training program, and to several other clean energy and climate mitigation and resiliency planning projects.
MAPC’s Clean Energy Department works closely with municipal and state officials, community-based organizations, and other stakeholders to develop innovative clean energy and climate programs, procure needed services and technologies, and advance transformative policies. Project work areas include developing municipal and regional climate action and net zero plans; increasing municipal energy efficiency; electrifying buildings and vehicles; expanding the use of and access to renewable energy; building a clean energy economy through workforce training and job opportunities; and advancing other local-level strategies that mitigate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. A strong lens towards building greater equity and climate justice in our region guides this work.

MAPC is the Regional Planning Agency (RPA) serving the people who live and work in metropolitan Boston. Our mission is to promote smart growth and regional collaboration. MAPC’s staff includes approximately 100 full-time employees located in downtown Boston in a transit-accessible and bike-friendly office. MAPC currently has a hybrid schedule offering staff flexibility to work from home and office time for in-person collaboration.
MAPC currently has a hybrid schedule, combining time in the office with remote work. Employees must reside within a commutable distance from MAPC’s Boston office within 60 days of their position start-date.

Responsibilities (including but not limited to)
- Work with Boston’s Office of Workforce Development and other key regional stakeholders to implement the Good Jobs Challenge Grant, recently funded by the US Economic Development Administration (EDA), to build an inclusive and accessible clean energy training and job pipeline for the region.
- Lead or support projects with municipalities to develop equitable plans, policies, and programs to advance renewable energy, energy efficiency, vehicle electrification, and other climate goals.
- Research, write, prepare, design, and present reports, briefs, and other materials to relevant stakeholders, including municipal boards and staff.
- Organize in-person and virtual clean energy and climate-related forums, events, and workshops, presenting content and facilitating public discussions.
- Conduct quantitative and qualitative analyses to help municipalities evaluate and develop strategies to meet their climate and equity goals.
- Assist the Clean Energy Department’s pursuit of grants and other funding sources, technical assistance, and new project development.
- Cultivate and maintain relationships between MAPC and municipal partners, community groups, utilities, state and federal agencies, foundations, and other relevant stakeholders.
Evening events, occasional weekend events, and local travel are a responsibility for this position. MAPC does not require that you have a vehicle; however, you must have a valid driver’s license and/or the ability to arrange transportation to meetings in different parts of the region. MAPC provides support for travel, including a Zipcar account and BlueBikes membership.
- Candidates for this position should have a Bachelor’s degree plus a minimum of three (3) years of professional experience work experience in the clean energy, climate, or planning fields OR a Master’s degree and a minimum of two (2) years of professional experience working directly on clean energy or climate issues.
Successful candidates for this position will demonstrate all or most of the following:
- Knowledge and understanding of current practices and trends in clean energy, climate mitigation, climate equity, green workforce development, and/or related planning fields.
- Strong commitment to equity and climate justice.
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills with a wide variety of audiences including municipal staff, elected officials, state agencies, community organizations, and the public.
- Experience with qualitative and quantitative data collection, analysis and interpretation, and communicating results.
- Experience designing and managing projects and budgets, multi-tasking, balancing priorities, and meeting deadlines within projects.
- Ability to work well independently, as well as collaborate within a team setting.
- Experience building and maintaining partnerships and relationships with external stakeholders, including frontline communities and community-based organizations, and facilitating discussions and processes with partners and the public.
- Multi-lingual, multi-cultural, and/or cross-cultural experience.
- Some experience in climate, energy efficiency, and renewable energy data management and analysis, program models, technologies, and/or tools.
- A willingness to learn on the job is a must.
- Demonstrated interest in keeping up to date on emerging and innovative topics within the field.
NOTE: Interested applicants who do not quite meet all of the qualifications are encouraged to apply. At MAPC’s sole discretion, the Agency may consider such applicants for a Clean Energy and Climate Planner I position.

Compensation and Benefits
The salary ranges from $68,000 – $78,000 depending on qualifications and experience. This is a full-time exempt position.
