The Town of Bedford is searching for a Full Time (32-hours per week) Food Bank Transportation Assistant to coordinate delivery schedules with partners, pick up, transport, and provide on- and off-loading of food and supplies, set up product for distribution and assist in the maintenance of the Food Bank space and equipment. The Transportation Assistant will be responsible for developing and implementing plans that support and/or expand the acquisition of product for client distribution in alignment with the Food Bank’s mission. This position reports to the Healthy Bedford/Food Bank Coordinator. 

The Transportation Assistant will Coordinate delivery schedules with partners and the Food Bank administration/staff, pick up and transport food and supplies/donations/purchases to Food Bank and ensure food is secured properly for transport; coordinate vehicle logistics and community relations, manage shared vehicle schedule as appropriate, manage pick-ups from couriers, work with hired staff/company to ensure timely and reliable delivery and keep active relationships with transportation substitutes as needed. The Transportation Assistant will also set up product for distribution, ensure that food lockers and self-serve units are amply stocked with healthy food for scheduled and unscheduled pick-ups, assist with guest inquiries or pick-ups as available and keep loading dock area free of debris/snow other impediments to receive of delivery

Other duties include leading and assisting volunteers and other staff members with loading/unloading of freight, supervising the handling and maintenance of hand operated equipment to move and store food, completing regular cleaning for self-serve units and assisting in the overall maintenance of the warehouse and equipment. The Transportation Assistant will advise the Coordinator of any vehicle and/or equipment maintenance requirements, respond to special needs presented by clients, donors, volunteers and participating pantries, report any pantry schedule changes, closures, emergencies, incidents/accidents, equipment needs, etc. to the Coordinator a timely manner, ensure partner compliance with Food Bank rules, regulations and membership agreements and assist with home deliveries. 

Successful candidate will possess exceptional attention to detail, excellent communication skills, ability to work with confidential information, and experience with personal computers including working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, Canva and database systems. Candidate must be a team player, highly organized, self-motivated, and possess excellent judgment, customer service skills and enjoy working with people of all ages and abilities. 

Previous education and/or experience in a municipal setting preferred. A general understanding of food bank operation is desired. High School Diploma required; Associates degree preferred. A combination of experience and education may be substituted. Candidates must hold a valid Class D State Driver’s License and have their own vehicle for daily use.

The physical and environmental demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Work is performed both inside and outside and the employee may be subject to loud noise, exposure to extremes in temperature, and inclement weather. Employee is subject to one or more hazards such as those associated with power equipment and truck lifts. Work is mutually mental and physical. While performing the functions of this job, the employee is required to bend at the waist, push, pull, more lift and carry up to 50 pounds, twist/turn, climb ladders, shovel snow, seek to assure proper and complete cleaning and use dexterity of hands and fingers to operate equipment and drive a vehicle. 

Starting salary for this position is $24 per hour. This position is a 32 hour/week position. Position is grant funded and reliant on renewal of funding support from grantor. The hours for this position are: Mondays and Tuesdays 8 am – 4 pm, Wednesdays 8 am – 2 pm and Thursdays 8 am – 6 pm.
